Hope is a thing with feathers
That perches in the Soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.

did you know…
Matrescence and patrescence refer to the profound transitions a woman and man undergo when becoming a mother and father, respectively. These terms recognize that the shift into parenthood is not just a physical or logistical change, but also a deep psychological, emotional, and social transformation.
Matrescence, coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael, parallels adolescence, highlighting the identity shift women experience as they move into motherhood. It involves navigating new roles, societal expectations, and the emotional complexities of bonding with a child while also managing feelings like loss of autonomy, changes in relationships, and the pressure to meet ideals of perfect motherhood.
Patrescence, though less commonly discussed, describes the father’s journey into parenthood. Like matrescence, it involves balancing newfound responsibilities, emotional challenges, and changes in identity and relationships. Fathers often experience shifts in how they see themselves, their partners, and their role in the family.
Both terms acknowledge that becoming a parent is a developmental process, full of both joy and struggle, as individuals adjust to their new realities. Understanding matrescence and patrescence helps to normalize the complex emotions parents face during this life stage.
